We are open!
We are now open for hires at North Berwick and Portobello for East Lothian and Edinburgh residents respectively in line with current guidance. From the 26th April we will be open for hires from other local authority areas too and Haven Seton Sands will reopen. At this time please only come for hires with one carer to comply with current rules around household mixing. We will wear a mask for the duration of the hire and all equipment will be sanisitised before and after each hire. As much as possible we will comply with physical distancing requirements. We can't wait to welcome you back to the beach!
Beach Wheelchairs is a Scottish Charity which believes that everyone has the right to enjoy our beautiful beaches.
The charity started hiring adapted wheelchairs for the beach for free from the Beach Hut in North Berwick in July 2015. We now have 3 projects and have hired our beach wheelchairs nearly 1000 times. Each hire is unique and allows families and friends to spend special time together on the beach.
We are based in North Berwick (East Lothian), Portobello (Edinburgh) and Seton Sands (East Lothian). Each site has a range of beach wheelchairs and equipment. Please click on the tabs above to see what is available at each site and details of how to book.
Beach wheelchairs can also be used to allow children to take part in educational trips, individuals to attend beach weddings and may be used at other beaches or off road sites by prior arrangement.
'Can’t thank you guys enough for today! For the first time since her accident Sarah could go down to the beach with her husband, kids and dog and have an amazing time. She even dipped her toe in the sea!’
All of the wheelchairs have been specially designed to enable individuals with disabilities to get back on the beach. Unlike a standard manual wheelchair they have large, rubber wheels which move easily over the sand. We hire out beach wheelchairs free of charge from each of our seaside locations using local volunteers.
